Cripple Creek, a historic gold mining town southwest of Pikes Peak, now houses mostly casinos. History buffs can still find some alternatives, however.
The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, open seasonally, goes through the mining district and nearby scenic areas.
The Outlaws & Lawmen Jail Museum and the Cripple Creek Heritage Center offer a view of history, and the Mollie Kathleen Mine offers a tour 1,000 feet down into an 1890s gold mine.
Nearby Victor, which calls itself the City of Mines, features well-preserved 1890s buildings.
