Eldorado Canyon State Park
Location: Boulder County, southwest of Boulder
Eldorado Canyon’s steep sandstone cliffs are a magnet for climbers, offering more than 500 technical routes, but tamer pastimes are available at Eldorado Canyon State Park, too.
Hiking, picnicking, mountain biking, fishing all are popular in the breathtaking canyon with its sheer rock walls along South Boulder Creek.
Summer weekends are crowded, but visitors will have better luck weekdays from May to September and during fall, winter and spring months. Once the park’s capacity of 220 vehicles is reached, more are admitted only when space becomes available.
No camping is permitted, but some campgrounds are located within an hour’s drive. Young people 6 to 12 years old can participate in the Eldorado Canyon State Park Junior Ranger program to learn about protecting the park’s natural treasures.
In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are offered.
