The Phoenix Gold Mine is a working mine just west of Idaho Springs that invites visitors inside for tours.
The mine belongs to Al Mosch, who has mined in area for 60 years. He leads one-hour tours of the mine, which is at 46 to 52 degrees year-round.
The namesake Phoenix Vein was discovered in 1871 and changed hands several times, with extensive work being done in the 1930s on three levels going to a depth of 500 feet.
