Staunton State Park
Location: Park and Jefferson counties, west of Conifer
The new Staunton State Park, just 40 miles from downtown Denver, is still closed to the public but may open in 2012.
Frances H. Staunton gave to the state the ranch her parents had homesteaded. She asked that it become a state park, “. . . to be preserved essentially as a wilderness area.”
It is a region of mountain forest and meadows, ranging from more than 8,000 feet in altitude to more than 10,000.
Development of the park for public use is under way.
