The Tattered Cover Book Store is Denver’s premier independent bookseller, with three locations that feature sofas, overstuffed chairs, antique tables and private corners among the bookshelves to give readers a casual place to relax and read.
The bookstores sell new books, newspapers and magazines and have expanded into used books. They host about 400 authors, illustrators and other special guests each year. The stores also have coffee and tea shops and free wi-fi.
Owner Joyce Meskis purchased the Tattered Cover in 1974 from the founder, Steve Cogil, who got his start in 1971 with just 950 square feet of retail space and two employees in the Cherry Creek North district. She moved the bookstore first to a larger Cherry Creek location and then to a new spot south of City Park, and she has added bookstores in LoDo near Union Station and in the suburban Highlands Ranch Town Center. A new gateway store for commuters is located at the renovated Union Station downtown, and satellite stores are at Denver International Airport on Concourses A, B & C.
